5–8 October, 2025

Zurich

This masterclass is open to young musicians aged 11 to 18 who wish to deepen their knowledge, skills and playing of early music.

The programme covers music from the 15th to the end of the 18th century on all instruments that were played during this period: Violin, recorder, oboe, flute, bassoon, cello, harpsichord, harp, chamber music ensembles with baroque and classical repertoire. Composers such as Telemann, Bach, Handel, but also Monteverdi, Purcell or Castello, CPE, Haydn or Mozart are our guarantee of work and experience. The lessons are given by an outstanding team of experts and are divided into individual work on the instruments, workshops on specific topics such as improvisation in early music, ornamentation and diminution theory, chamber music, group work for better technical mastery of the instrument, listening exercises and the experience of baroque music.

Maurice Steger and an outstanding team teach the young musicians of this Junior Academy.

Maurice Steger, professor of early music, flauto dolce (recorder) and conducting, has always been intensively involved with young musicians - in workshops, in university courses as a professor, in masterclasses and in joint training and preparation for concerts. The support he offers is comprehensive, be it with suggestions on technique, sharing his profound knowledge of music and music history, integrating and testing musical ideas as well as promoting the social structure of the groups he works with and the joy of working together.

The Junior Baroque Academy offers the perfect framework for this. Led by a team of professors under the direction of Maurice Steger, this intensive and inspiring week is the highlight of the year of musical training for many young musicians. Various instrumentalists will also take part in 2025 - based on the registrations and instruments of the young people, the team of lecturers will be made up of the main subject teachers (violin, cello, recorder), ensemble leaders, harpsichord and fortepiano accompanists.

The project is supported by the Ruth Burkhalter-Stiftung zur Förderung junger Musiktalente.
